As part of my Somatic Experiencing training, I had to complete a certain number of personal SE sessions and consultations to make sure I was learning SE both from my own inside out and the outside in with my client work.
Enter Dorothy
One of those personal sessions was with a Training Assistant who could see through my defenses and coping strategies like nobody else. I knew instantly I wanted to work with her to really grow personally and learn my craft from the inside out.
Dorothy is as empathic and psychic as they come. And when you meet Dorothy, you immediately know that she is not to be messed with.
Also, hiding your “stuff” is pointless: she has already (lovingly) sussed you out, right through your core, warts and all.
She immediately perceived how this empath tended to “go big,” shooting out my perception and energy field just as big and wide as I could—but to the exclusion of—effortlessly inhabiting my own deepest self.
The result? Probably energetically somewhat overbearing, hyperactive for sure, and my ability to really focus internally stretched much thinner than it could be.
Certainly not green: rather, a wasteful use of internal resources
Dorothy challenged me to NOT expand my field so widely. She wanted me to pull that energy IN. Not go big. Not work so hard (a forever challenge for me).
Her mantra here?
Don’t “radiate.” Instead, EMANATE.
How It Feels to EMANATE
It felt weird. It felt sort of lazy. As your classic overachiever, I must admit it feels very odd to not “try so hard.”
Continually, she would urge me to come back in, not “do” anything except for…
(Here’s the big trick)…
Gently tune into the places in my body that are healthy, just streaming along fine, happily humming their own coherent tune.
Didn’t matter whether these were large areas of my body, small areas, specific areas…
What mattered was that I was just gently present. Gently noticing where my physiology was purring along, doing its job of living.
The Result?
Less wear and tear on my own system. Increased gentleness for both me and the people around me.
And because I wasn’t “doing” some energetic “thing,” my clients found more coherence in themselves, more calm, more wholeness.
So Our Empathic Assignment Is…
In a time in which Conservation of Resources is more and more important in so many areas of life, we’ve got to start “doing it easier.”
I know I need to sustain my own energetic resources. My own passive solar production.
It’s True: Less is More
So now I practice (an ongoing project) “Less is More.” No need to radiate that energy towards other people and the world.
Instead, I practice being mindful to keep my own energetic and nervous systems quietly regulated and coherent. Knowing that doing that will have an even more powerful—and gentle—effect for the people who need it most.
Emanating instead of radiating means my clients and the other beings in my world get to find their own best ways of being resilient, coherent, and empathically clear.
And who among us wouldn’t appreciate increased quiet, coherent, sweet energy in our lives?
So…go easy on yourself.
Stop “doing” your energy field.
Don’t radiate.
Emanate.
Trust that when you focus on your own gentle coherence in your body and energy field, others can more easily resonate with that and find their own ways of feeling clear, flexible and strong.
Then we all gain, and we learn from the inside out that Empathically Being is much more powerful AND easy than always Energetically Doing.
Comment:
Do you radiate or emanate your energy more?
How can you BE more and DO your empathy less?
